Fathers Day; honoring my fathers

Fathers Day

Last Sunday it was Fathers Day, the day we have the opportunity to pay some special attention to all those great dads out there! For me it was a special day this year because I had the opportunity to spend it with "both my Dads!" Both my father and my father in-law were in the same time zone, on the same continent, in the same country!

My dad lives in the Netherlands and he and my mother are visiting the USA this year. Travel plans worked out in such a perfect way that we were all able to spend Fathers Day together, my parents and the in-laws.

I consider myself a lucky guy in about every area in life, especially however, when it come to "my fathers" I have (had) in my life.

For one, I have a great dad who has taught me so many valuable things in life, has provided me an excellent and fun childhood and always supports. Because I am the oldest grandchild in my family I have been blessed to spend a lot of time with my grandfathers. I have so many happy memories of all my grandparents (some of which are, thankfully, still with us). I have always been convinced that in the dictionary behind "opa" (grandpa), my grandfather's name was written.

And now as a married man I, just like that, got another great dad in my life!

For me, Fathers Day is a day to stand still at how lucky I have been (and am) with such a great father, father in-law, and grand-father(s) in my life. And it sure sounds cliché but the older I get, the more I recognize the valuable lessons I have, and still do, receive from my fathers.

While I am writing this a song comes to mind, a song that reminds me to share my thoughts and feelings with my loved-ones around me. So many times we tend to take our relationships for granted and taking a moment and express our love and gratitude is something every relationship will greatly benefit from.
