"Change the part or play the part!"

The other day I was waiting at a local coffee-shop for my next client. I was sitting in a corner with perfect view of all that was going, the perfect place to "people watch." I love observing people in their natural habitat. I don't listen to what they are saying; I watch what they are doing, how they behave and how they interact with others around them. A thought came to mind that moment "Life is but a play" a quote I remembered from a Shakespeare play I was in a long time ago.

So there I was sitting observing people playing their play. We all tend to take on different parts in our master play, "our life." What intrigues me is: why are we playing all these different roles? Why is it that we assume certain roles in life? And most important do all those roles actually serve us?

So many times I hear that people do not like the situation they are in. They do not like their work, their relationship or their financial situation. Question is: what part are they playing in that certain area? Do they actually like the part they are playing? Are they being authentic? And if not, what is holding you back from changing it?

People feel helpless when it comes to change. "No I can't stand up for myself, because then I will lose my job!" Well if that is your choice, then it does it not make sense you are still in this situation?

If you truly want change in your life, look at the roles you are playing. If you were to review them like a play-critic how would you describe your part? Then make the choice: change the part or play the part!
