Celebrating Freedom on May 5th; Expand your personal Freedom

May 5 celebration in the Netherlands.

On may 5 1945 the peace treaty was signed and ended World War (WOII) officially, and ever since May 5th has been a nation holiday in the Netherlands. Most people have the day off and all over the country you will find events celebration Dutch Liberation. Over the last few years the festivities have changed focus from a celebration of Liberation to a celebration of Freedom.

This chance in focus is mainly because the new generation does not have such a strong connection with WOII. I do however, all my grandparents played their part in the resistance against German oppression and I grew up hearing stories about those times (even though most people do not really talk about it).

I now like to take a moment on May 5th and think about what freedom actually means for me, and whether I feel that I experience it on a daily basis. I am so grateful to live in a place in which I experience freedom all the time. I can express my thoughts and ideas without being lock up, I have natural beauty all around me, and can be in the midst of this beauty within minutes.

What is Freedom for you?

I know how important it is to experience your sense of freedom on a daily basis. Working with my coaching clients, we very often take some time to determine what their sense of freedom is and how they can create more of this empowering sense in their lives.

Here is a tool I find extremely helpful in expanding your experience of freedom.

Write down where your energy goes each and every day. Then take a moment and evaluate all these activities and ask yourself; How do these activities make me feel?

Once you are done with this review step you can ask yourself: Are there activities that completely drain me? What would happen if you could set that activity aside? If it's a committee, or organization, what would happen if you stop your involvement?

The next step is, of course, to act on your evaluation.

I will guarantee you that once you have take the step of cutting one or two draining activities in your life, your energy will expand and so will your sense of daily FREEDOM!
